Dónal N. Morrissey (ar dheis Dé go raibh sé)
In eagarfhocal eagrán an tsamhraidh 2021 de An Gael, luaim Dónal. Seo an sleocht sin as an eagarfhocal:
In the editorial of the 2021 summer issue of An Gael, I mention Don. Here's that passage from the editorial:
[referring to a story in the current issue] Is as an iris The Wolfe Tone Annual é, agus foilsíodh an ceann seo i 1947. Is minic a bhíonn ábhar againn as an sean-iris bhreá sin, a d'fhoilsigh Brian O'Higgins le blianta. Éacht a rinne sé, gan amhras. Ní bheadh aon chur amach agam féin air, ámh, ach amháin gur bhronn mo chara Dónal Morrissey cairn díobh orm roinnt blianta ó shin. Fuair sé iad óna athair féin, dúirt sé. Fuair Dónal bás mí na Márta, faraor. Go raibh sé ina thír tairngire. Ceapaim go bhfuil cuma Tír na nÓg ar a chúinne féin de Neamh. Fíor-Ghael a bhí ann. Ar dheis Dé go raibh sé. Beidh cuimhne againn air go deo.
It is from the periodical The Wolfe Tone Annual, and this one was published in 1947. We often have material from that fine old publication, which Brian O'Higgins published for years. A heroic feat, for sure. I wouldn't know anything about it, however, except that my friend Donal Morrissey (Sr.) gifted me with a pile of them several years ago. He got them from his own father, he said. Don died in March, alas. May he be in his promised land [the theme of the issue]. I think his corner of Heaven will look like Tír na nÓg [they mythical land of eternal youth]. He was a true Gael. May he be at God's right hand (with the good guys). We will always remember him.
This passage can be heard on this recording, starting at c.6:46.
Of course, the magazine is available here (and can be read for free on-line or as a downloaded pdf file).
I hope I remembered correctly about geting the magazines from his dad. Anyway, they've been a great resource for me, and I've just scratched the surface of what's in them.
(Hope nobody minds I borrowed this picture. Was hard to find one of him by himself - that's the kind of guy he was!)
